DIY Classic Skirt: PR B3134 + Dont Cut Corners

Happy Monday! I had big plans for sewing this weekend but of course life interrupted and all I had a chance to make once my classic black skirt which I have been meaning to make for ages. I have so many skirts in my closet EXCEPT a black classic skirt so I tackled that on Sunday.

I had this piece of amazing Valentino Silk Crepe from Italy that I couldn't wait to cut and although I could have used it for a fancier garment I knew that I needed a STAPLE piece that would last me for years if constructed well and that is always a great way to use expensive fabrics. It's not always best to buy cheap fabric if you are making something that will become a classic wardrobe piece because what is the point of making it if you are going to use cheap fabric? Sometimes its best NOT to cut corners and now I have a skirt which I saw online retail for $660  made to fit my body for just over $100 (any of these would make amazing classic skirts)

Pattern Review B3134 View B
Gap Shirt HERE / DIY Skirt (similar) HERE / Dorothy Perkins Heels (similar) HERE / J. Crew Clutch

Pattern Description: Misses A-line or Flared Skirts

Pattern Sizing: I cut size 8 in view B

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? This pattern is listed as fast and easy and it is in terms of pattern pieces and how easy it is to construct and I wanted a very simple A-Line skirt pattern.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The simplicity of the skirt which is exactly what I needed: A non trendy classic a-line black skirt that will be with me for years to come.

Fabric Used: Designer Silk Crepe by Valentino (can be ordered by calling 213-488-9003 or filling out a special order form here: http://www.lowpricefabric.com/t-specialorders.aspx) Also, Gorgeous Fabrics has AMAZING colors in the Silk Crepe

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did not make any design changes but I did change the side zipper to an invisible zipper and I used the skirt pattern pieces to cut out a lining in a yummy silk habotai. I did some hand sewing on the waistband for a nice clean finish and I hand sewed the lining onto the zipper.

Would you sew it again? I will be making a few more staple skirts in yummy colors like a Kelly green maybe?

Would you recommend it to others? YES, this skirt pattern is easy to construct and not complicated at all but YOU can make it amazing by using great fabrics and linings and making sure to use careful construction methods ;-)

  5. I absolutely love this look and your diy skirt is amazing. As always you are such an inspiration. Hopefully when my sewing skills improve I will be able to up my sewing game to the better fabrics. Right now I'm a newbie and using the cheap stuff...lol But totally agree with your choice of using a more expensive fabric for a timeless and classic piece that is a staple. Stay blessed. :)

  7. Hey Mimi...Great skirt.

My Christmas wish is that you will start doing tutorials (for a fee)that will show us how to alter patterns, add linings, etc etc. I have yet to see something that you made not look as if it were made for you. Everything fits perfectly.

  18. Hi Mimi,

Nice skirt. I love the combination of the colors, your blouse and shoes.

I'm jealous that you used fabric from Italy. My best girlfiriend went to Italy this summer, I asked her to bring me some fabric back. She comes back with no fabric and tells me Italy didn't have any fabric. LOL!!! LOL!!! I said to her "why don't you just say you didn't go where they had the fabric. Don't tell me Italy didn't have any fabric." I was upset with her. LOL!!!
